Fortnightly update going out to over 1625 subscribers

Last week we were at the Big Tent festival – thanks to all the people who participated in the valuable vegan outreach. Susan, who manned a stall for the first time, tells us what she thought of it: “I was quite nervous about the idea of being on a stall at an event but as it turned out I had nothing to worry about, especially with Shane there to keep me right. Once we had located the tent and got our table set out it was just a case of being a friendly face and chatting to passers-by who expressed an interest. Some people seemed to be happy just to browse the leaflets so we were only really talking to people who looked like they wanted to engage in conversation. It is definitely something that I would be happy to do again should the opportunity arise.” Thank you Susan!

John, who also attended the festival, informs us that despite the higher environmental ethos at the festival, the catering for vegans was disappointing. Though we hear that vegan haggis and lovely vegan muffins kept the troops going! Unfortunately, there was open roasting of animals – and a queue for deer meat. There is still lot of work to be done on outreach as to what 'ethical' really means - to begin with, lets not make the mistake of equating organic meat with ethical. 'Happy meat', quite simply, does not exist. There is nothing ‘ethical’ about an animal being murdered for its flesh.

In the next couple of weeks, we are off to Aberdeen to meet the lovely people up there who’ve been holding stalls and leafletting over the last few months! If you are interested in participating in local action in Aberdeen, then come along to Café 52 on the 7th August. You won’t be committing yourself to anything, but we can test the waters together and see what happens! Also a call-out for people in Fife – its all about getting together locally, so please get in touch. Email varda@greenfork.org.uk

Finally, today we salute Catherine Sinclair (died 6th Aug, 1864). Sinclair funded the first street fountain at the west end of Princes Street, Edinburgh for not just men but horses and dogs too! First of its kind, the Sinclair Fountain is still in existence, now on the walkway beside Gosford Place, Leith. One of the stones bears an inscription - "Water is not for man alone..."
