Bi-monthly update going out to over 1600 subscribers

Dear Members and Friends,

Lots of focus on the upcoming election, and everyone seems to have a campaign and suggestions on who to vote for. Take a look at Vote4Animals though (more on this below) – it’s a fantastic campaign with easy e-actions you can take to make this election count for the animals. More here http://www.vote4animals.org.uk/

We ran a piece last week on exotic meat, here’s the news again http://ethicalvoiceforanimals.org.uk/shownotice.php?articleid=50 Since then, we’ve got new flyers on going veggie and on exotic meat – so if you are able to help with the drops and leafleting sessions that take place every week, get in touch. To order some, email info@ethicalvoiceforanimals.org.uk

The new Green Fork website is also online – check out www.greenfork.org.uk – it’s still under development and we plan to include features which will help local groups connect and share resources amongst and with each other.

Speaking of websites, as a part of The Green Fork project – which aims to help build a grassroots low-carbon,  vegan, sustainable, organic food movement  in Scotland - a new website for Angus Vegans and Veggies is on it way too. The Green Fork workshop also going ahead in June (date TBC) in Dundee, so watch this space! To support all this activity, Liz – an EVA supporter and one of the founding members of Angus Veggies is running for the animals. All funds raised will be given to Angus Veggies and Vegans, The Vegan Society and Ethical Voice for Animals (EVA). Will you sponsor her? http://ethicalvoiceforanimals.org.uk/shownotice.php?articleid=57

Finally, we’ve been in touch with sporran makers and retailers this week asking them to go fur-free, ahead of the week of action in May – 22-28 May. More on the week of action and how you can participate, see http://www.edinburghfurfreecity.co.uk/woasp10.php

We hear of a ban on wild animals in circuses in England – but as all animal welfare matters are devolved, Scotland drags its heels, refusing to introduce it up here, even though most councils in Scotland don’t allow their lands to be used by circuses with animals. 94% of the public in the UK supported the ban. We asked DEFRA for a breakdown on how many people from Scotland voted for the ban, but that information isn’t available See http://ethicalvoiceforanimals.org.uk/shownotice.php?articleid=53
Bobby Roberts, who own Britain’s only circus elephant, has pledged to move with Annie the elephant to Ayrshire in Scotland. Last year’s protest against Bobby Roberts when they came up to Scotland sent a clear message that animal circuses are not welcome in Scotland. Scotland sees a rise in sickening bloodsport: Ruthless gangs are setting vicious dogs on roe deer in the Borders - to rip them to pieces so their meat can be sold http://ethicalvoiceforanimals.org.uk/shownotice.php?articleid=54

Animals can't vote, they can't protest, they can't lobby MPs. Once every few years we have the opportunity to show politicians how we feel - the forthcoming General Election is our next chance and we must take it. By showing that votes are won and lost on animal issues, we can make sure that politicians begin taking animal cruelty seriously. Fantastic new campaign Vote 4 Animals - and all it needs is your support and the click of a mouse! See http://www.vote4animals.org.uk/

A long-awaited EU ban on selling animal-tested cosmetics could be delayed, perhaps by years. The ban is due to come into force in 2013, but the European Commission is already preparing for a delay

And to end, some fantastic news – reports of few fishermen joining the annual Canadian seal hunt that started yesterday. The EU ban on trade in seal products has caused a big drop in the demand – a great example of how all the emails, letters, phone calls, protests and actions we take to protect animals all add up! To the animals we pledge, we hear your cries and we are coming,

See you tomorrow,

Eva
