Gulls maimed in airgun attacks
Scottish SPCA

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a spate of airgun attacks has left gulls fatally wounded in Nairn.

Our inspectors have been called out on several occasions in recent weeks after members of the public have found seagulls severely injured in a residential area within the town.

X-rays conducted on the birds have revealed airgun pellets embedded in their bodies.

Senior Inspector Andy Brown said, "These incidents are particularly concerning for a number of reasons.

"First of all, whoever is responsible for these attacks has not been able to kill the birds outright, so they are left to suffer an often slow and painful death which is inhumane and cruel.

"Secondly, these attacks are taking place in a built up residential area, close to a school. It is very worrying to know that someone is using a firearm in such a highly populated area, therefore it is not only the welfare of animals that we are concerned about, people could be at risk too.

"We're appealing to anyone who has witnessed an airgun attack on a gull, or who knows who may be responsible for the shootings, to contact our Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.

"Seagulls are much more active at this time of year as it is their breeding season, therefore some people may perceive them to be more of a nuisance.

"However, causing an animal unnecessary suffering is an offence and the sooner we find out who is doing this the better, for the birds and the residents of Nairn."

We have previously received reports of similar airgun attacks on seagulls in the Inverness area and country wide.

Anyone with information should contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline: 03000 999 999. Information is treated in the strictest confidence and can be left anonymously.
