Programmes and activities undertaken in 2009-10
EVA
Compassionate Living Fayre'09: EVA organise Scotland’s largest free vegan food fair showcasing healthy low-carbon food and also disseminate information on animal rights issues. Stalls from various national animal rights organisation, talks, entertainment events attracted nearly 300 people and the fayre is now a permanent fixture in the calendar.
Peas vs Pills: Talk on health and veganism which generated a lot of interest. Feedback helped identify gaps in existing support for veganism in Scotland, laying the groundwork for The Green Fork.
The Green Fork: A campaign to help build a vegan, low-carbon, sustainable food movement in Scotland. New groups will be encouraged and existing groups helped with start-up issues. In 09-10 we lay the ground work for establishing these in Dundee and Borders. Excellent feedback received, demonstrating a clear appetite for the campaign.
School talks: All schools in Edinburgh were contacted in May'09 to promote school talks on veganism and animal rights issues. 14 talks conducted in the last year.
Film Series: Film programme launched in collaboration with Autonomous Center Edinburgh. 4 animal rights films shown over 4 month during the summer.
Campaigns Tour: EVA organise stalls in various parts of Scotland, raising awareness of the campaign against real-fur sporrans. Last year included Galashiels, Perth and St Andrews. This contributed significantly to recruiting supporters outside the central belt.
Week of Action against real-fur sporrans: As a part of the campaign against real-fur sporrans, EVA launched the first week of action in September'09. This resulted in the first ever compilation of 100%fur-fre retailers and makers. 8 communities participated, hundreds of emails sent and thousands of leaflets handed out with press coverage.
Street action is healthy with regular leaflet drops, neighbourhood drops, stalls and leafleting actions. This takes considerable time and effort and is one of the vital outreach activities of EVA.
IT/Newsletter: 4 websites – EVA, EFFC, CAARE, TGF - attract over 2000 hits per month. Latest news on Scottish animal issues and events all over Scotland of interest are posted online. Info on campaigns, actions, facts is also available.
EVA send a fortnightly newsletter also over 1600 subscribers with latest news, events and alerts.
Misc/Collaborative work/Other: Worked with various groups – AR, environmental, towards initiatives/talks/events, including action against cow autopsy in Edinburgh, investigation of hunting in the Borders, protests against circuses, talks on veganism, animal protection issues in Edinburgh and Fife. EVA is committed to building a unified strong movement for animal rights in Scotland.
EVA also spent considerable time and effort into self-organisation, now with an improved constitution, formalised committee and clear roles and responsibilities. Work also undertaken to update contacts and press lists along with devising a fundraising strategy which is now being implemented.
