Real-fur sporrans – For Scotland’s sake, make it fake! Week of action.
Edinburgh the Fur-Free City
Edinburgh the Fur-Free City (www.edinburghfurfreecity.co.uk) has called a Week of Action across Scotland from 22nd -28th May for everyone to speak out against real-fur sporrans. Communities all over Scotland – Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Fife, Glasgow and Inverness are gearing up to participate in local events.
In Scotland one of the most common uses of real fur is the production of sporrans; seal skin is commonly used in semi-dress sporrans. Recently the European Union introduced a ban on trading in seal products but annually many animals, including fox, badger, beaver and rabbit, continue to be brutally killed for their skins.
But fur is not just inhumane, it raises serious environmental concerns. A ranch- raised coat requires 20 times more energy than manufacturing a synthetic one. Fur farms produce massive amounts of animal waste, a major contributor to global warming. Fur farming has been banned in the UK since 2003, but we continue to import furs from foreign farms and support environmental and animal abuse in other countries that we don’t want in the UK.
Public support and demand for fake-fur sporrans is steadily increasing. Since our week of action against real-fur sporrans last year more people have joined us in our campaign against real-fur. We now have more than 1600 supporters regularly participating in actions and campaigns and thousands more have signed the petition to ban real-fur in the UK.
Edinburgh the Fur-Free City is calling for a fur-free Scotland and has contacted the majority of sporran makers and retailers with information on humane and environmentally-sound alternatives. With the additional information, manufacturers and retailers can now adopt a fur-free policy.
To help consumers make an ethical choice, we've put together a list of compassionate retailers and manufacturers who provide 100% fur-free sporrans - and do not deal with any fur. As a result of working with EFFC, they are all offering a 10% discount to anyone buying a faux-fur sporrans with one of our leaflets. Come along and get a discount voucher to get 10% off your ethical faux-fur sporran and wear with pride knowing no animal has been harmed.
It’s time to put an end to real-fur sporrans. Join us and find out more at www.edinburghfreecity.co.uk
